My Career Learning and Journey

After leaving school at 17, I began my journey into Early Years by enrolling in college, where I completed the Scottish National Nursery Examination Board (S.N.N.E.B.) qualification over two years. Following this, I secured a part-time role in a newly established nursery as an Early Years Practitioner, which gave me the opportunity to build strong foundations in practice.

With growing experience and confidence, I progressed to the role of Senior Early Years Practitioner. At this stage, I also undertook the SVQ Level 4 in Childcare and Education, further developing my skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities. This qualification helped support my transition into the role of Nursery Manager, where I was responsible for leading teams and maintaining high standards of care and education.

My next step led me into a more training-focused role as an Early Years Assessor with Tigers, where I had the opportunity to support, coach, and guide candidates through SVQ Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications. After six years in this role, I progressed further into a Managerial position within Tigers. During this time, I recognised the importance of keeping my own practice and professional knowledge up to date, and I began the PDA in Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 9, graduating proudly in 2019 at the age of 52 a clear reminder that learning truly has no age limit!

My learning journey continues today. I am currently undertaking the ‘Care Leadership and Management award at SCQF Level 10’. I strongly believe that keeping your skills and knowledge current is essential in this sector. Learning doesn’t stop when you leave school it develops. You continue to learn in new and different ways throughout your career, and it becomes easier and more rewarding when it’s something you’re passionate about.
